Kay
Initiatives Ltd (formerly Kay Business Services) was
established in 1995 as a vehicle for selling Martin Kay's skills
and experience in the world of IT project office and quality
management, using PRINCE and ISO9000 concepts. With
the development of the internet in the late 90s, this
work quickly became an exercise in communicating relevant and
timely information around large organisations using company
intranets. During Kay Initiatives' first five years Martin
was working in the London area on IT project-related intranet
sites for Siemens Business
Services (at the Home Office), Legal
and General Assurance, Cable
and Wireless and NTL. With the
arrival of "IR35" tax
legislation in the UK in 2001 the market changed, and it was
no longer financially viable to provide these services on
a contract basis to large organisations. Big business's loss
was small business's gain, therefore, as Kay Initiatives was
re-focused on offering web site services mainly to smaller
organisations, in conjunction with a relocation from London
to Somerset.
Since relocating, quality of life has improved immensely, and
although it has taken time to build up a client base, business
continues to grow steadily (most often through referrals and
through the local community). Consequently second and third
generation sites through referrals are now being
created. Martin has been keeping his hand in with project-related
intranet work, with an assignment for the Department
of Health, and has been continuing to develop
"Process Mapping by Tube"
which has now been featured by the Einstein Network television
company. Web design work continues, and several sites have
been created for high profile local businesses including one
of the local estate agents - the full spectrum of sites completed
to date can be seen on the portfolio
pages.
Martin is the Company Director and has a BSc
(Hons.) and a Professional Diploma in Management (two-thirds
of an MBA). The degree course covered topics as diverse as
Information Technology in Society, Managing in Organisations (in which a distinction
was gained), and Managing Development and Change. He is also
a Founder Member of the UK
Telework Association which promotes
the concept of remote working, (i.e. without commuting). His
Myers-Briggs
classification is an ISTJ. |
For those seeking
reassurance about reliability, continuity of service and customer
satisfaction, business growth is a good general indicator of
this. Since moving the business to Somerset in 2001 my client
base has steadily increased and I am now responsible for over
100 web sites, either designed and/or hosted and/or maintained.
Not all of these (thankfully!) require regular attention, and
those that require regular updating are managed by the client
themselves using content management systems.
I have decided not to publish client testimonials
on this site - I believe them to be of limited value because
the reader has no real idea how genuine they are. But if you
are considering putting some work my way, please have a look
through the porfolio of sites and see if you can find one that
is similar to what you have in mind. We can then go through that
particular client's specific requirements and see how they compare
to yours in terms of looks, functionality, and budget, so we
can have a clearer idea of what will be possible to achieve in
your case. |
